Life Magazine and the Preservation of James Dean

As part of my larger dissertation project I am sorting through the mountain-esque ephemeral lode of James Dean’s posthumous presence.  Of particular interest to me are the practices and ideologies that undergird the preservation of his visage and his interpretation as a young man/actor/cultural symbol.  Though I will have much more to say about this later, for now I offer up several amazing photographs from Life Magazine’s tribute to the icon.  Below are a few examples from the larger collection (again, these are the property of Life Magazine and are demonstrated here in relation to research):
